I know it is illegal to spend an officer, and I've never been in the army. My stepfather gave me all his old uniforms, and I could make good use of some jackets. I just wanted to ensure it would not make any problems in public.

Although fewer people are actually saying that you are an officer, that's fine.
You can not not have the rank insignia and may attend a function wearing a uniform policy.
(I've always laugh Oliver North pensioners shows his hearing in Congress in the uniform of naval officers dressed) but not to a criminal case.
